You are right to point this out. The cuckoo chicks don't know that a password chirp is required, and they have no intention or inclination to imitate the other birds. Now that said, given enough evolutionary time, it's quite possible that cuckoos will adapt and figure this out. Read more

The only frame of reference we have here in Ontario is Hurricane Hazel from 1954. It killed over 80 people and left another 4,000 homeless. It's thought that the hurricane was a Cat 4 when it made landfall. So we do have a precedent here for big Atlantic storms to inflict considerable damage. Read more
