Stargate SG-1 bothers me when I watch it for that reason, at least the early seasons. There was a lot of projection on the ancient societies as to how they should conduct themselves. It's a very stark show. Fun though, for what it was. Read more

I think it's a little more complicated than that, at least with the 2nd part. A bit element of this comes with a massive military industry that cranks out a lot of guns, and one of the big factors with Iraq (that I can see), is that there's an assumption that X weapon system can easily replace Y soldiers on the field. Yeah - most Military SF isn't really about the military at all at its core: it's almost always about social stuff. (That's not bad). MilSF is a good catch-all name for it. Read more
