The Apple TV Is Your Dumb-TV→Smart-TV Deal of the Day

The tree outside my window just changed from its green summer livery to a more seasonal burnt orange. Many people feel cheated by the changing of the seasons, but look at the bright side: it's indoors time! Every self-respecting geek loves the winter, where you can stay inside and watch movies, play games, and vegetate until the earth's revolution brings the warmth around again. But this also means you should be getting your hibernation cave in order.

The Apple TV is a great candidate to be your TV's brain. We at Gizmodo favor an approach where you buy a beautiful (yet dumb) display, and add smart capabilities to it through a set-top box. The Apple TV is one of the best: it's tiny, power efficient, and it streams Netflix and Hulu at 1080p. It's well-connected to the iTunes store. But its real special sauce is Airplay: if you've got an iDevice with the newest software, you can simply mirror it on your TV. And this tiny box is perennially rumored to be getting apps. It hasn't happened yet, but it could be coming soon.

Apple's got some refurbished Apple TVs in stock for $85. We at Dealz rarely see discounts on the Apple TV, so this is a pretty great deal for a product that could be Apple's most important in the near future. Also, refurbished devices from Apple are basically new: this Apple TV comes with a year of AppleCare. And if you pick it up today, it'll last you through the winter, or, y'know, at least until the fabled Apple set-top box (doesn't) come out. [Apple]
