This Macbook Air Is Your Reigning-Gadget-Of-The-Year Deal of the Day

The 2012 Macbook Air may be the best ultraportable laptop, but let's not forget about its older 2011 brother.

What do you lose when you buy last year's Macbook Air? For starters, you get a processor from a generation ago—a Sandy Bridge processor as opposed to an Ivy Bridge processor. In addition, the 2012 Macbook air has a USB 3.0 port that its older brother lacks. And finally, your charger will be the old style charger, instead of the current generation Magsafe that newer Macbooks use.

Aside from those minor details, the 2011 Macbook Air is still the same computer that Gizmodo readers voted the Gadget of the Year in 2011. It's got the same physical footprint as the 2012 model (and the 2010 model!). It gets great battery life. Also, Apple treats it as a new laptop, giving you a one-year warranty and an option to upgrade to AppleCare. And, as a nice bonus, you'll get a free upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. By all measures, the Macbook Air 2011 is still an excellent laptop.

At Apple's refurbished store today, you can get $180 off on a 13" 2011 Macbook Air with a 128GB SSD. An 11" 64GB Macbook Air is also available for $750. Those are 16% discounts on computers that are 95% as good as this year's models. [Apple]
