Who would've guessed that the hero gadget of Hurricane Sandy would've been the lowly power strip? Connected Manhattanites, lacking power for their phones and laptops (or streetlights), staggered uptown to find a place to charge up, only to find any free outlet already taken. But good samaritans plugged in power strips, and brought the power to the people. New Yorkers rejoiced.
Sure, you might already have a power strip, but you probably don't have one this nice. The Monster Digital PowerCenter is $19 on Amazon today with Prime shipping, and it not only multiplies outlets, but in the case of another sudden power outage, it will protect your computers from surges and spikes. Even better, it does a little bit to fight the climate change that got us in this mess: its GreenPower feature prevents phantom loads, when your chargers continue to draw power even when there's nothing plugged in. Pretty advanced for the humble surge protector. [Amazon]
